Harvest Monday............03/12/2012

This past Saturday, I finally harvested some of the overwintered Kale and Collards from the cold frame beds. I figured that I would harvest just the bigger leaves and that would be enough for dinner. As you can see, there were a lot more greens ready then I had thought!

I came in with this nice big colander full of greens! 
There are Vates Collards, Lacinato Kale, Squire Kale and a few leaves of what I think must be Winter Red Kale. There is one plant in the bed which has light purple veins. I was having trouble with the Winter Red Kale germinating...but, I guess that one made it.

Total Harvest - 10.7 oz    
Collards - 3.8 oz
Kale - 6.9 oz

  4. That is indeed a full colander of kale and what makes it even nicer is the mix of varieties. Each brings a different eating quality to the table.

    1. I have three more varieties of Kale started which will be planted out some time this week. It's been so dry here. So I am waiting until after we get a little rain.

    1. Yes, I think you should put a cold frame on your "to do" list this year. You will be very happy come next winter.

  6. Lovely bowl of kales. At the moment I have the Italian Lancinato, some 'Red Russian" aka "Ragged Jack" descended from seed I bought years ago from Seeds Blum and a similar looking variety that pops up in some mesculin mixes.

    I've seeded some collards this week, some for me and some as bunny food.

  8. We love kale! And it is super good this time of the year! We cut a bunch this week to and added it to a casserole!! Yum!!

    "Kale-juice" is very popular in Japan since it contains a lot of vitamins.

  10. Beautiful colander of blue-green winter greens. Just lovely. Loved your post on community garden frustrations too. Visit my blog to see my own frustrations. Your plot is three times larger than mine, so I hope you get a lot of good produce from it. And it looks like you have SOIL. I have gravel and dust in my community garden plot. The only growing medium is what I hauled in. Now the powers that run our gardens have made us take our our raised beds, tomato cages, trellises, etc. Basically, if I had it they disallowed it, although it wasn't personal. Bummer.
