We all get some of our plants mixed up at times. But, this time it wasn't me! The seeds were supposed to be Speckled Roman Tomatoes. This is the description of the seed; STRIPED or SPECKLED ROMAN TOMATO - Stunning &unique, long pointed red fruit have wavy golden stripes! The fruits are a perfect mid-size fruit, with brilliant color and exotic markings. Very meaty flesh with excellent sweet flavor. They have very few seeds. This great variety was developed by John Swenson from a stabilized cross of Antique Roman and Banana Legs. He called it Speckled Roman.
At first I thought one of the two plants of this variety were mislabeled by yours truly. When both of the plants fruit are exactly the same, I knew it wasn't me.
It's definitely not a Kelloggs Breakfast or....
a Pineapple.
Does anyone have an idea what variety this tomato is????
No, but it certainly has some "pumpkin" like ribbing going on there. Very interesting.

DeleteLooks like some sort of beefsteak tomato but no idea which. I'd email the seed company and challenge them to identify it.

ReplyDeleteI just looked up the amana orange tomato. It's not that. This has some red on the bottom and in the cracks toward the bottom. It also has a little red inside similar to a pineapple.

DeleteI had the same "problem" a few years ago: not being able to identify a big orange heirloom. Thank you Jenny for Amana Orange. On the other "problem", sure hope you get your striped/speckled roman next year because they ARE wonderful - one of my favorites. There will be pictures on BAckyard Chilibloggin when they are ripe.

ReplyDelete2 years ago I bought soybean seeds and when I opened them up they were clearly Broad beans. The store wouldn't take them back either since they were opened...lol

It does look like it. But, the Marvel Stripe is a regular leaf tomato. Hopefully she will get back to me soon!

DeleteI never grow orange varieties (or yellows) other than cherry types so I am not going to have any info or good educated guesses to offer up. Hopefully it will be a good tasting tomato since it displaced the one you really wanted to grow.
