Starts are Finished

I guess that I really should have taken a closer look at my fall starts. I uncovered them today to find sticks. They were covered with little cabbage worms.

This is what is left of my Fall Broccoli & Cauliflower!

I do have about a dozen starts that Jose from the community garden gave me. That is not nearly enough though. I'm going to start some more starts today. This time I am going to cover them and keep them covered!! I'm not sure if it's too late. But, I'm going to give it a try. I can always purchase some too. The worst thing that can happen is I will have too many.

  1. What a shame - I guess the worms are what we call caterpillars - are they from the large and small white butterflies? Our young plants are netted but it doesn't stop the slugs and snails getting in!

    1. Yes, that's what they are!! I'm so disgusted with myself for not keeping them covered.

  2. It happens. I don't like it either. It's those white and yellow moths that love the veggies.

    1. Unfortunately your right. I am not a happy gardener right now!

  3. I always seem to be fighting some pest. Something is out there eating the tomatoes right now I'm sure, as I keep finding holes in them. Better luck with your next starts :)

    1. The pests just never seem to leave us alone. Oh well, I started more. I hope it's not too late!

  4. Oh that is horrible. I always stick my brassica starts under a row cover if I can find room. If not I get a small piece to wrap them in. I've got to start hardening mine off tomorrow and then start some more.

    1. Daphne, I never thought they would be bothered on the covered back porch on the bench. Oh well, lesson learned.

  7. Wow! They were really hungry. I've been slow in starting my fall transplants this year. I'll be sure to keep them under cover.

    1. I covered them when I saw a little nibbling. The next thing I knew they were done for.

  8. Robin,

    Oh no!!! Damn worms!!!!
Once those worms get started they can eat everything fast.
I hope your new starts do well for you.

  10. That is very disappointing. Gardeners never give up tho, do they. Hope these ones do well for you. Nancy

  12. Robin, Sorry to hear about your start dilemma. Hopefully the next batch will turn out great. The great thing about gardening is that do overs are allowed. The extreme weather patterns have certainly given gardeners/farmers challenges like never before. I'm hoping that this weather pattern breaks soon.

Have a great day of garden do over.

  14. Oh, nooo!! How disheartening... Were they growing outside or inside?

    1. They were on the back porch on a bench. I thought they would be fine there. I usually start my plants inside.

  15. Oh no! Sorry that happened, my parsley seedlings looked like that this past spring :(

  16. Sorry that happened. My fall crops of broccoli and cabbages etc were not my best seedling starts but they seem to be okay and I got them in the ground this weekend. If they make it through this first week and get growing, I will be out of the woods. Otherwise, I will have to hurry and just do a direct seeding.
