Harvest Monday ...... 3/14/2011

This past week I harvested a few small radishes and an anemic looking carrot from the cold frames. It's not much.....but it's a harvest! There's some lettuce and some more pak choi out there ready to be harvested, which I will do later today.

I will weigh these when we use them tonight in a salad with some fresh lettuce just waiting for me out in the cold frames.

Stop by Daphne's Dandelions, our host of Harvest Monday to see what's going on in gardens around the globe!

Digging at the Plots

Even though Mother Nature is still not cooperating with my gardening schedule, "The Italian" and I did get some work done at the plots. Yesterday the two of us went over there for a couple of hours. I did some digging and "The Italian" re-measured everything, straightened up and inventoried the fencing, posts etc. that was left there.

Today my "Little Garden Helper" was supposed to come over and go to the plots with us. Well, he woke up with a cold and did not come over. Even though the weather today was much colder then it was supposed to be, I decided to go to the plots and finish digging the one bed. "The Italian" stayed  home and worked on the drawings for the plots and his water storage system. I will post the drawings in a day or two.

The one side bed which is 3' x 34' is turned over. I also installed the bunny fencing along this side. This bed will have broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and onions....so I really need to get it ready to go!

I started to dig this bed where one of the two varieties of asparagus will be planted....but, I got so darn cold I went home!

We are planning to get at least three more large beds dug this week and framed out....we will see if Mother Nature cooperates with our plans!!!

"The Italian" is making Bread!

Last week I found a brand new bread maker on Craigslist for $10.!! It's probably not the best bread maker out there....but how can you go wrong for $10.?? That's about the cost of 3 loaves of bread at the store!! We decided to get it and that "The Italian" would be responsible for making the everyday bread with it.

Here it is...the $10 bread maker!
There wasn't a manual with it, so I went on the internet and downloaded one.

TaDa..."The Italian's" first loaf of bread. It looks a little crusty in the picture...but, it is a really good bread for everyday. I'm sure that he will be testing many recipes!

Thanks Granny for giving us some bread making tips!!

Seedlings and more seedlings

This morning after checking on the seedlings downstairs, I decided that many needed to be re-potted. The broccoli, cabbage & eggplants were getting quite big. I thought that I had enough pots that would be the correct size for them. Well, I didn't have nearly enough. Then I remembered that there are alot of plastic cups in the one cabinet that I refuse to use. I just hate eating off of paper or plastic. When we eat outside we use real dishes.

I drug out all of the plastic cups that I could find, got out the drill and starting drilling holes in the bottom of them. It took me about four hours to re-pot and reorganize everything downstairs. I even had to turn on the second germinating table.

This is the back table with the smaller seedlings and warm weather veggies on it. I can fit four trays on each table and also a row of pots on the end and in the front.

The eggplant are looking good and you can see some mint and small tomato in the back.

Some of the peppers are starting to get their true leaves. Once they are re-potted, they will be kept on a separate tray. I used to have some problems with them when they got a little bigger. Then I learned from a greenhouse grower that they do not like their feet wet and should be watered very carefully & sparingly until they are planted in the ground.

Here are a few of the early tomatoes. The tomato in the back to the left is a Cherokee Purple, seed from Diana. The tomato in the back on the right is a Cherokee Purple, seed from Thomas. The tomato in the front on the right is a Paul Robeson, seed from EG....and the left front pot is some Winter Savory.

The Rosemary seems to be doing well.

The front germinating table has the Broccoli, Cabbage, Pak Choi, Spinach, some Lettuce and "My Little Garden Helper's" Sunflowers on it. I will also put the cauliflower here once they have germinated and are re-potted. By the time I need this table for the warm weather veggies, these should be in the greenhouse..except for the sunflowers.

Look at that Beautiful Cabbage!! Can't wait to get things in the ground!!

Nasty Weather & A Fixed Tire

Mother Nature has not been cooperating with my gardening plans! I had planned to go back to the plots on Friday. Because of HER, I was not able to get back there until yesterday. I did get some work done and had planned to go back today to put up some more bunny fencing and take some pictures. Well, it is so dreary, damp and windy that I didn't go. The weather forecast is calling for rain and flood warnings Thursday and Friday. So it looks like I won't be going back there until Saturday. I really shouldn't complain since I have managed to get quite a bit done so far.

Although I'm in a bit of a mood, which is unusual for me. I do have these nice green herbs growing in the kitchen to bring a little Spring and sunshine in to the house.

Some Nice Basil

A little Cilantro

And a Fixed Tire!

Since it was too damp and windy to go out today, I wrestled with this wheel barrel tire for quite a while this morning. It has been flat and needed a tube put in it since last year. Well, I got that done! Now all I have to do is go outside and put it back on the wheel barrel!
